A hutch is the upper display cabinet with glass doors that sits on top of the buffet, typically 30 to 42 inches tall, designed for dishware display. A complete “buffet and hutch” refers to the two-piece unit together. Many mid century buffets were designed as part of a matched pair where the hutch is removable, which gives buyers flexibility to use the lower case alone as a sideboard.
