Warren Platner for Knoll Mid Century Side Table
Warren Platner’s signature seating, introduced as the Platner Collection by Knoll in 1966, is built by welding hundreds of curved steel rods to circular frames. Each lounge chair requires more than a thousand welds. Platner personally formulated the production techniques for the collection, and the steel-rod construction simultaneously serves as the chair’s structure and its decorative motif. Original Knoll-marked pieces from the 1960s and 1970s are what most collectors track.
Authentic original-era Platner Collection pieces from Knoll carry the Knoll medallion or stamp underneath, hand-welded nickel-plated steel rod construction with consistent weld patterns, and original Knoll fabric tags on cushioned variants. The bronze finish is less commonly produced than polished nickel and tends to command higher market value when authenticated. Late-licensed reproductions exist but typically show less consistent welding and different finish tolerances than original-era production.
