Eero Saarinen

Genuine Eero Saarinen Tulip tables for Knoll carry a chrome Knoll Studio plaque underneath, inscribed with Saarinen’s signature and the design year. The cast aluminum base is unusually heavy. A real Tulip pedestal weighs more than reproductions of similar dimensions, and the protective rilsan coating on the base is part of the original Knoll specification. We verify each Saarinen for Knoll piece on our floor against these markings before listing.

The most common pairings are Saarinen’s own Tulip armchairs and side chairs, which were designed to read as a continuous form with the pedestal table. Warren Platner side chairs are a popular alternative on the secondary market, as their wire-frame curves echo the Tulip pedestal’s sculptural lines. Both pairings preserve the open-base look Saarinen designed the Tulip series to achieve, and we often carry the matching Tulip armchairs and Platner accent chairs at the same time.
