American of Martinsville’s mid-century output is predominantly American walnut, with select pieces in oak, cherry, and mahogany. Walnut dominates dresser tops, case sides, and drawer fronts on the Dania and Urban-Suburban lines designed by Merton Gershun. Drawer interiors are typically poplar or oak. Hardware is brass or brass-plated, with cane work appearing on select Dania pieces.
The original American of Martinsville Furniture Company was founded in 1906 in Martinsville, Virginia, and the brand has continued in various forms through its long history. The pieces in our inventory are vintage mid-century originals from the 1950s through the 1970s, when Merton Gershun’s Dania and Urban-Suburban lines were in production.
