Paul McCobb For Planner Group Mid Century Stands
Authentic Paul McCobb pieces typically carry a manufacturer’s label or stamp on the underside or behind backboards identifying the production line: a Planner Group label for Winchendon Furniture pieces (his maple-and-iron modular line beginning 1949), a Calvin Furniture label for his brass-edged walnut and mahogany case goods, a Lane Delineator label for his rosewood-and-cane consoles, or a Directional label for his walnut case goods. Construction tells include modular dimensions, slender brass-edged legs, dovetailed drawers on case goods, and the simple geometric drawer pulls McCobb favored across his work.
Paul McCobb’s most prolific manufacturer collaborations were with Winchendon Furniture Company (the Planner Group line, his most famous body of work, beginning 1949), Calvin Furniture (the Calvin line in Linear, Irwin Collection, brass, walnut, mahogany, and bleached-wood sub-lines), Lane Furniture (the Lane Delineator line of rosewood-and-cane consoles and credenzas), and Directional Furniture (walnut case goods). Each of these production lines is verified in our current inventory.
Paul McCobb’s most famous design is the Planner Group line, produced by Winchendon Furniture Company beginning in 1949. Planner Group was a modular maple-and-iron series of bedroom, dining, and case-goods pieces that introduced affordable modular modernism to American homes and dominated McCobb’s commercial success. Planner Group dressers, headboards, desks, and modular case goods make up the largest portion of our Paul McCobb inventory and remain widely collected today.
